Cassidy - Bringing Joy, One Tail Wag at a Time

Cassidy 2Dear Frankie's Friends, When I started thinking what to write about Cassidy for your foundation it occurred to me, I could tell you about all the people she has helped over the years, I realized that would take entirely too long. I could tell you how she helped me and actually saved my life as a service and companion dog. I have PTSD. There are some very good friends and family in my life but few and none are near by. Along with my diagnosis comes personality quirks and traits that make me difficult to love not to mention terrified to deal with everyday life. In the 13 and half years I've had Cassidy in my life she has never looked at me with anything but love and devotion. She makes me feel needed, wanted, and She "works" for me! She makes me laugh at myself and life. She seems blind to my negative qualities. She is an angel from above sent to make me a better person, to make me strive to reach outside my comfort zone. Saving Cassidy is expanding my world and making me continue to work at being a better person, to try to make a difference in some way. It is because of Cassidy that I have become a dog and cat trainer/nutritional specialist. I hope to help others realize that they too can find more in life through the love of a companion/service pet.

Cassidy 2Thank you for helping to extend her work and the tremendous difference she has made in the lives of all those she has touched. I am convinced her work is not done, with your generous donation she can continue touching lives and helping me each and every day. You are special people saving more lives than you realize when you help a dog or cat because no one pet ever touches just one other life. They are perfect, like babies and spread love in the same innocent, nonjudgmental way. They are our creators helpers bringing joy to the world one tail wag at a time.

Cassidy's care was funded by Frankie's Friends "Eddie Croman Fund" that assists pets with life-threatening heart or kidney conditions.

Gratitude for Sharkie

sharkie1 March 24, 2014. We received news of Sharkie's passing from his loving family today. We're posting their lovely sentiments as a tribute to "Sharkie".

"Sharkie was VERY brave. Smiling, optimistic, curious  and always made my heart melt! We had so much fun playing "Rope", getting wet chasing streams of water from the garden "Hose Game", doing "Down-Down" (half of a 'rollover'), eating chicken jerkies (his favorite), "ducks" jerkies, "biskies" (Marrobones), "piece-piece" kibble, and of course, Sharkie's massage sessions every morning. Your kindness and charity will not go forgotten. Your organizations will be on my list for people to donate to and I will actively do what I can to seek donors. I will continue to advise people go to your website and give the address out so people can help families and individuals, and such dear pets who are stricken with these very serious diseases requiring costly treatments.

God Bless You All, and THANK-YOU SO MUCH.

I can not express the gratitude, once again, to you guys at Frankie's Friends. Sharkie is responding so well to the treatment and care Dr. Lachowicz and his staff are giving him, that I truly can not believe it!

(He also seems to LOVE all the attention, however, he is also making progress in learning how to behave like a gentleman around other dogs....)

THANK-YOU SO MUCH and GOD BLESS YOU ALL AT FRANKIE'S FRIENDS !!!!!

With your help we're hoping the chemo treatments will bring Red into remission and give him a chance to see his new baby sister (the foster kitty we've now decided to keep) grow into a cat. His other little sister "Bebop" a chihuahua rescue is eternally grateful at the extra time given with her big brother. We promise to send you updates, letters and pictures as we begin this journey as a family.Murphy, Red pic12 All our gratitude, Colleen, Sean, Red, & Bebop"

Precious Life Extended for Beloved Beethoven

Dispigno pic1I can't put into words how much you mean to me and my beloved Beethoven. I am finally writing to express my gratitude for helping me when my Beethoven was desperately sick and he was fighting to live. The precious life you extended to my Beethoven, I will always remember and hold dear to my heart. Beethoven, although was taken from me at 7 1/2 years old, he had the will and energy of a feisty healthy horse. He relished being around people and loved to play and please everyone. He was absolutely beautiful and gave me so much joy, it is almost indescribable how much I love him. I hope you can continue to help as many precious dogs and cats just like Beethoven, until the day a cure is found. All my thanks!!! Rita

Gizmo is Healthy and Happy!

photoGizmo is a spunky 8 year old pomeranian/ papillon mix that I was asked to foster for a rescue 5 years ago. He had been badly abused, and because of this, he had some aggression issues. I worked with Gizmo and he learned to trust me. The rescue saw the bond that we had, so they asked me if I would be willing to keep him. I said of course! In June of 2013 I noticed that Gizmo's jaw was offset, he did not seem in distress, but the appearance was abnormal and seemed to have occurred out of nowhere. I brought him in to our regular vet to have him examined. Gizmo would not let them look in his mouth (Gizmo has quite the personality and if he does not like something, he will not cooperate), so I had to schedule another appointment for him to be put under anesthesia and have x-rays done.

At the next appointment, the x-rays showed that Gizmo had a severe fracture in his jaw. Our regular vet said that the surgery he would need was beyond what they were comfortable attempting so they referred us to Blue Pearl. I applied for Care Credit and brought Gizmo into Blue Pearl at the end of June. Dr. Hansen at Blue Pearl said that he had a mandibular fracture, possibly caused by peridontal disease, and that he was also in need of a dental. The cost estimate for his surgery far surpassed my financial abilities and the credit line I was approved for with Care Credit. I left in tears.

I applied to a couple other pet financial assistance groups, but they said that due to a lack in donations, they were only providing funding to immediate life or death situations. I asked a couple other vets if they would consider payment plans for his surgery, but they said no. In early August I felt that Gizmo's mouth was getting worse. I brought him into a vet clinic close to my house that I knew did payment plans. They determined that he had infected bone protruding from his fracture site. They said that they had never performed a surgery like this before, but that they were willing to do some research and attempt it. I agreed, but it made me very nervous due to the fact a couple other vets had said that his condition really needed a specialist.DSCF0950

I contacted Blue Pearl again to ask for a reference letter to write a couple more letters to financial assistance groups one last time. I received a call from an employee at Blue Pearl who asked if she could forward my information to Frankie's Friends. I said of course. I was amazed to get a call from Frankie's Friends just a few hours later. They told me that if I brought him back to Dr. Hansen and she agreed, they would provide us with a grant to help pay for his surgery! I called Blue Pearl as soon as I got off the phone with Frankie's Friends and we scheduled an appointment for his surgery less than a week later.

Gizmo has been doing wonderful since he got his surgery. His jaw will always be a little crooked, but he is healthy and happy and infection and pain free! We will be forever grateful for the financial assistance that Frankie's Friends provided for us. Without this assistance, Gizmo could not have received the care he needed.

DSCF0209When I am done with college and in a better financial state, we will be paying it forward so that someone else can benefit from this kind of kindness.

Thank you Frankie's Friends!

Katie and Gizmo

Molly - What a Gift You Gave to Us!

MollyFriday, Aug. 9, 1:30pm had arrived and the three of us were ready to meet this much discussed and wanted “new puppy.” Lydia had discovered her on the Hennepin County Humane Society website and on Wednesday determined we “needed” her. She had instantly stolen Lydia’s heart and would soon wiggle her way into the rest of the family’s hearts as well. She would move in where Tripey, our 13-year-old had passed away in May, had left. Well, 8-week-old “Blackie” enjoyed exploring our home. After three days and numerous name ideas later, “Blackie” was renamed Molly and starting to settle in. She was healing from her spaying surgery and adjusting to life without her littermates. Within a short amount of time, “little Molly Dolly” was able to crawl under the bed, on top of the clothes waiting to be washed, behind chairs, and on mom’s clutter. We had seen her with “dry, brittle, old mice” and most often got them away from her, even though she found them “quite tasty”. We were under the impression that the mice would not have enough poison in them to cause a problem, (boy were we wrong). When she became sick, we were alarmed. Lydia took her to Dr. Dave at the Normandale Vet and then on to the Emergency Vet in Eden Prairie. When we received the diagnosis we thought that we would lose her because we did not have the money to afford her care. Lydia called us back to say that Frankie’s Friends would help us with the bill. When Lydia heard that Frankie’s Friends would help us with $1000, she almost started crying right there in the ER. She could not believe that someone would be able to help her.

Molly2Today Molly is three and a half months old and doing great. She loves going to pick out her daddy from work, playing with her squeaky toys, chasing toes and slippers all over the house. One of her favorite games is scratchers, which is played on mom and dad’s bed and with hands under the blankets or pillows so that Molly can jump, dig and pounce at the hands. Now that Molly has grown she is not able to fit in some of the places that she fit as a tiny baby, and her family has cleaned up as many of the mice as we can find. Thank you so much Frankie’s Friends. We are so grateful to you for saving our baby. What a gift you gave us! Thank you seems so easy to say but we are truly grateful—you see, God had helped us find a rescue dog, and you at Frankie's Friends helped us give her a third rescue.

Amber Appreciates the Kindness...

Amber 1Dear Frankie's Friends,Your program has taken a literal weight off my shoulders. The support you provided me so that Amber could get the treatment she needed was such a relief. I have been unemployed over a year, and struggled to prioritize spending much needed resources on Amber to prevent her from losing her hair and suffering so. She is now 100% recovered from her ailments and this would never have happened without this program. I am so grateful and I know if you were here with us, Amber would give you a lot of affection to show how much she appreciates your kindness.

Thank you.Amber2

Sweet Kitty Kat is Rescued!

phone_37722On Saturday, August 14, 2013, my sister and I had spent the day scrap booking at a friend’s house. Returning home around 9pm, we noticed fire rescue leaving the neighborhood and a sheriff’s officer across the street from the house. As we pulled into the yard, we were informed the back room of the house had caught on fire. My 9-year-old cat, Kitty Kat was in the room and had been taken, by fire rescue, to Blue Pearl emergency hospital. Upon arriving at Blue Pearl, I learned Kitty Kat was oxygen dependent due to smoke inhalation and was in distress. She needed to be placed in an oxygen box in ICU and monitored for lung functions. Kitty Kat was covered with soot and scared. She needed immediate care in order to survive.I am alive because of Tampa firedepartment, Blue Pearl and Frankie's Friends

Due to my recent hospitalizations, I was really unsure how I was going to be able to pay for Kitty Kat’s care. When I first spoke with the staff at Blue Pearl they were so understanding and non judgmental. Next thing I knew they had contacted Frankie’s Friends and a large amount of my bill was being taken care of. When I was able to pick Kitty Kat up and take her home, I found Frankie’s Friends had put even more money towards my bill. This generosity was more than I could believe, they are true angels.

If it had not been for the caring Tampa fire fighters, the loving staff at Blue Pearl and the generosity of Frankie’s Friends I would not have my sweet Kitty Kat today. Heartfelt gratitude goes out to all of you.

Dutch... a gentle, loving, beautiful boy

Simone, Dutch pic2I wanted to write this letter to the trustees of the Dr. Agnes Varis Charitable Trust to say thank you for granting Dutch this opportunity. With the treatment that Dutch will be receiving, along with the very good prognosis thus far, you have not only given him a second lease on life, but have saved my life in so many ways. Dutch and his other daddy Greg, (who resides in a nursing home at this point in time, paralyzed from the waist down) and me, just lost Dutch’s sister Nazo to lung cancer. We were terribly devastated when we lost Nazo. Having had so much loss over the past 4 years, and having had so many life altering events as well as financial difficulties, it can be difficult to find the shred of hope, the ray of light that we all pray still exists in the world. You have given that hope back to us, which we may have found as lost. As Gregory and Dutch and I still continue on with our struggles, (my mom is now in the hospital in critical condition as I write this), you gave us joy today, Dr. Britton is also a wonderful person who is empathic, and understanding, with clear and articulate communicative skills. We appreciate her very much. I will continue to keep you posted on Dutch’s progress and will send a picture as soon as I am near a computer with a picture that I believe is worthy enough of this beautiful, gentle, loving tuxedo boy.Simone, Dutch pic1

Harry is Home and Safe with Me Today...

HarryI had written a big, long-winded story about my dog and what happened but realized, I don’t need to go into detail for you to understand what happened and the difference the staff at Blue Pearl in Manhattan made for my little dog and me. His name is Harry. He’s a 5-year-old, long-haired dachshund who thinks he’s a human child! Harry has suffered from seizures all his life but they were controlled quite well with diet and he had one only occasionally. In early December, Harry had a cluster of seizures and I rushed him to the vet. They kept him for observation and pumped him full of Valium. Later that evening he was fine, so they called me and said I could take him home. The doctor gave me the information for Blue Pearl and told me to take him there if there was a night-time emergency.

Very early on Sunday morning, I had occasion to use it. Out of the blue, Harry was paralyzed. I had no clue how this happened and by the time I arrived at the Blue Pearl hospital in Queens, I was crying hysterically. I thought I was going to lose him. Long story short, I took Harry to see a neurologist at the Manhattan Blue Pearl location the next morning. Within 10 minutes of walking in, Harry was being examined by Dr. Levitin, who told me that Harry needed surgery. I was devastated. There was no way I could afford surgery. I had been out of work for a year and was thinking about what I could sell to get the money together to save my boy.

Dr. Levitin saw my distress and told me about Frankie’s Friends – a fund set up to help people pay for emergency surgery in the event they can’t afford it. I had to come up with as much as I could to help pay for the treatment but Frankie’s Friends provided the rest. They did the surgery that afternoon and I waited at the hospital all day for him. When the surgery was finished, the staff allowed me to sit with him in the ICU for about an hour.

The next morning, I arrived at 9 a.m. and the nurses were so great. I felt confident that Harry was cared for and loved when I wasn’t there. He was in the ICU for four days, where I sat with him for about five hours each day. I was never made to feel like I was in the way, or that I was anything but a loving mom. Every day he got better and better until finally, on the fifth day he was allowed to go home with me.

It’s been 4 months since his surgery and he still waddles a bit, but every day it’s less and less. I owe it all to Dr. Levitin and his staff, Tosha, Natasha and a host of other nurses and caregivers. I have my baby boy today because of the commitment, dedication and compassion of not just the people in the Blue Pearl facility, but also because of the wonderfully generous people who contribute to Frankie’s Friends.

To those of you who helped make it possible for me to pay for surgery have my baby home with me and safe today, I thank you from the depths of my soul. Harry and his sister Annie kept me going when I had breast cancer. Your generosity allowed me to give him a chance at life, just as he did for me. As silly as this sounds, I believe that it was my dogs’ unwillingness to allow me to sit on the couch and fade away that helped me recover. They demanded that I walk them at least three times a day, play with them and love them. I don’t know what I would have done without them and I don’t know what I would have done without you.

To Dr. Levitin, Tosha, Natasha, Dr. Joyce at the Queens location, the wonderful staff of Blue Pearl, I am so grateful for the TLC you gave Harry and me. To the people who care enough to understand that to some of us, dogs are people too, are compassionate enough to offer people with limited funds a choice to give their pets a chance at life, instead of having them put to sleep, (which I undoubtedly would have had to do without your contribution), I will never be able to repay your kindness but please know that you are greatly appreciated by this mom and her boy. You know you most certainly helped to save his life but it’s likely you don’t know, that you probably saved mine too. Thank you.

Maggie is Her Joyful Self...

maggie1Dear Zeus Varis Fund Staff, About a month and a half ago, our energetic puggle named Maggie, had been diagnosed with an aggressive Lymphoma. At the urging of my local vet, we had been referred to the Blue Pearl Clinic in Park Slope, Brooklyn.

At the clinic we had met with Dr. Brooke Britton, who had been Maggie's guardian angel ever since. Dr. Britton had discussed with us Maggies's diagnosis as well as her options. She had also made us aware of the fund and its qualifications...20130831_202028

Today is week 4 of Maggies's treatment. Her appetite and demeanor are normal, side effects are thankfully non-existent; she is stable, but most importantly her old joyful self. We don't know what the future holds for our little Maggie, but we are forever grateful to your organization for allowing us to give her a fighting chance. We couldn't have done it without you and Dr. Britton's genuine kindness and care.20130917_101406

We are attaching a few snapshots of our little sunshine and pray for a miracle. Thank you again for extending a helping hand - our gratitude to you is eternal.

Thank you

On behalf of Maggie and our family, Sofia Zeltser.

Oliver is a Champ!

Oliver in his coneI am ecstatic to be able continue Oliver's care and assure that he has many more years to come. He is doing well right now, recovering quickly from his surgery. On a recent bandage change visit, a vet tech let us know that he is heeling quite rapidly and using his foot sooner than expected. Having lots of visitors and well wishers as well as extra chicken in his diet has definitely helped! He has bounced back so quickly I know that whatever treatments he has in front of him in the future, he'll be able to handle like a champ! I am so grateful to you and Frankie's Friends to continue his care! Thank you so much! Elysa Lozano

Tinkerbell is Fine - All it Took was Pixiedust and a Little Help from Frankie's Friends...

Tinkerbell 1There aren’t enough words to express how thankful my husband and I are to Frankie's Friends. Tinkerbell is a 5 yr old Mini Dachshund who was in labor for the 3rd time. But this time she had 5 babies and being a mini with a small frame, 5 was more than what she can handle. Her 1st was a beautiful baby girl, the 2nd was a still born, 3rd was a blue dapple baby boy, and after an hour of her pushing no more came out. That’s when we took her to BluePearl.

20121108_213343-1After doing an ultra sound they found she had 2 more unborn babies, but by the way they were positioned they hadn't survived. That’s when they told us she would need surgery . Something we weren’t prepared for financially, it was either surgery or she would die. We tried every means possible. The thought of losing her was unbearable.

Then Dr. Harris told us everything has been taken care of by Frankies Friends. Today Tinkerbell is back to being her crazy hyper self as she was before.

Frankie's Friends, Thank You So Very Much ... we wouldn’t be the same without you !!!

Very Grateful,

Vazquez Family
